Abstract

The purpose of the report is to present priorities and structure of the officially described federal American S&T program dealing with military critical technologies and to give a glimpse of one part of afield of military critical technology: detection technologies for biological and chemical agents. The report also aims at discussing the American ambitions and the development within S&T and the connection to national security. The officially described structure of the American defense science and technology (S&T) program includes documents of visional character and implementation plans. A document of inventoring character is also treated. The report gives insights into detection technologies for biological and chemical agents, an important technology field, which, according to the American point of view, is critical to reach goals in the national visions NSS&TS and JV 2010. Some of the technologies and priorities regarded as essential from the American point of view are highlighted. At the end of the report some reflections are made about the American possibilities to implement the S&T-strategy. The report looks at these questions starting with views from different writers who discuss the subject.
