Abstract
This report is a documentation of the discussions held and the material presented during a workshop at FO I Defence Analysis, at the 1 Sth of June 2001. The aim was to take a first step towards a common taxonomy of methods within the division. Traditionally, FOI Defence Analysis has worked with the problems in focus and methods have been chosen due to the character of the problems. During the 1990s, the tasks of the Swedish National Defence became less well defined, demanding a broader repertoire of methods, both on the organisational and individual level. During the workshop, the statement was made that knowledge of methods, as well as the choice of methods, are important in a study. To allow for other people to understand how the study has been carded out, a written summary of the methods used during a study is necessary. To enable a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the use of a specific method on a class of problems, there is a need for a common base of know- ledge and experiences. It is important that the choice of method takes into consideration the amount of available resources. A´good´ method is not necessarily good in a specific case, if the resources needed are not available. Not everyone at the division needs to be experts on, or even able to apply, all methods, but it is important to know about, and to utilise, the knowledge of the colleagues.
