Abstract

Battlespace Awareness has been studied in a network centric context. Sensor mix and communication systems are proposed. Possibilities and limitations concerning the implementation of network centric warfare are also treated. One conclusion is that surveillance and reconnaissance requires extensive manpower, even if modern technology is used. To minimize both the logistic and manpower requirements one need to exploit the possibilities to design easy-to-handle and multifunctional systems. Satellites seem to be important platforms for both communication and surveillance. New sensor technologies can be important, but for the foreseeable future a mix of different, new and old, sensors must be used. A great challenge is how to realize, at reasonable costs, a network with high degree of robustness, integrity and capacity, small time delays and effective management of information flows.
