Abstract
Models for IR background are needed for different purposes, e.g. the development of requirements for camouflage, basis for signature management and IR scene simulation. This progress report describes the work that has recently been performed in this area at FOI. It contains both a semi-empirical model for radiance mean values and an empirical model for a few texture features. Predictions with the semi-empirical model generally show quite good correspondence between calculated and measured mean radiance for the considered cases. However, there are some cases where the correlation with measurements is rather poor. We conclude that further work is necessary to get a model which is valid for more general conditions and which can be used to assess other statistical parameters than the mean radiance. Predictions with the empirical texture model show some correlation with measurements but the model assumptions and the selection of input weather parameters have to be further evaluated to improve the correlation.
