Abstract

By order of Nammo LIAB AB, in Lindesberg, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, the Division of NBC Defence, has performed a supplementary environmental risk investigation of three objects at their industrial estate. The main objective has been to present more elaborate data for use in future decontamination actions within the site, if any. A dimensioning of one soil filter, for cleaning run-off water, has been performed in the case of Object 3 (combustion area). In the case of Object 4 (fire rescue pond), tests regarding percolation of air in the pond were performed in order to bind a possible surplus of TNT to the sediment. In the case of Object 8 (old destruction site), sediment sampling up-stream and down-stream from the former destruction site has been performed in order to establish the distribution of the mercury contamination. In conclusion, as far as the combustion area is concerned, a soil filter having the function to clean run-off water from the combustion area can successfully be set up. When it comes to the fire rescue pond the sediments can probably be left unattended until there are changes in the usage of the soil. The sediments in the stream close to the old destruction site must be remediated at a proper moment but from an environmental point of view this can wait. However, it is of importance to elaborate working and contamination plans prior to the actual remediation.
