Abstract

This document is the outcome of a year-long collaboration between scientists from DRDC Ottawa (Canada), TNO FEL (the Netherlands), and FOI (Sweden) exploring the security of mobile ad hoc networks. All nations agreed on a tactical, peacekeeping scenario that was manageable for the purpose of the project. Critical communication links were identified in order to have the scenario analysed with unique link characteristics. The team collected, surveyed, and analysed national wireless military standards and systems with open standards throughout all layers of the OSI reference model. The analysis, which included a security review according to a team prepared security criteria, highlighted candidate systems and standards for the designated links. The analysis of the candidate open standards also identified weaknesses and a number of potential research topics.
