Abstract

The environmental impact from military acitvities at Bynäset (F4/I5 Östersund) has been studied in a preliminary investigation. The focus has been on localities for buried and dumped scrap metal (e.g. from rockets or bombs) and unexploded ordnance (UXO), as well as target areas. On the basis of literature studies, interviews with key personnel, field visits, groundeater modelling and a geophysical investigation, the environmental situation has been evaluated. From the standpoint of current knowledge and information, it is recommended to fence in the locality where scrap and UXO, if any, have been buried in the soil. Also, the target area of Bynäset and an adjacent area with abundant UXO should be enclosed for safety reasons. In order to detect if pollutants leak out into the surroundings at affected areas, soil, groundwater, surface water and sediment should be sampled and analysed with respect to explosives, metals and other related substances. Such a sampling plan is presented.
