Abstract

This report describes the result of our research within the field of mine countermeasures carried out in the project "UV sensor systems, establishment in new areas of operation". Especially, we have studied how to counter the mine threat in the phase of establishment during international operations and with focus on the detection of buried objects. The goal is to develop new search techniques, and methods of signal processing as well as methods for computer aided detection and classification. This report shows how to detect buried and surface laid objects with a dual frequency sonar and how to separate these two object groups from each other with the aid of signal processing. The report ends in a proposal for dual frequency sonar arranged on a tow fish or an AUV completed with synthetic aperture processing algorithms for both the low frequency and high frequency parts and also provided with signal processing algorithms to separate buried from surface laid objects.
