Abstract

The purpose of this study has been to investigate to what level it is possible to decrease the information support to the soldier without affecting the soldier's ability to handle bearings and positions. The background is that a soldier can handle a lot of information if he or she can concentrate on the information and its handling. As a consequence the attention to the combat situation will be decreased. To study how the ability to remember a few directions to objects in the surrounding terrain decreases during a walk, a study with students has been carried out. After studying a map over the area, the task of the participants has been to estimate the bearing and distance to two different positions and to the starting point, without the support of a map. Half of the participants have been equipped with a simple compass for bearing estimation. The result shows that the bearing estimations have not been improved by the support of a compass. The estimations have gradually decreased, for one of the objects and for the starting point. The differences between the subjects have been considerable, but their self-assessment of their uncertainty correlates well with their actual performance. The result also shows that it has been easier for the participants to remember their own movement, than to locate it correct on a map.
