Abstract

In a CBRNE event where chemical (C), biological (B), radiological (R), nuclear (N) or explosive (E) substances are used antagonistically or in the case of an accident including dangerous substances, it is important to be able to quickly identify the substance that poses a threat to be able to handle the situation safely and effectively. When the substance that poses a threat is unknown, it is initially handled by civilian or military CBRN teams, such as Avancerad Indikering and the Swedish Armed Forces 1st CBRN Company Reconnaissance Groups, to provide the commanding officer/ rescue leader with intelligence of the threat. During the 2000s, this equipment was made available to Swedish CBRN teams dealing with hazardous substances in the field. This literature study includes two main objectives. The first objective is intended as a general compilation of available instruments for those who are interested in CBRN and field analysis with mass spectrometry. The second part is intended to provide an overview of the method development for handling field mass spectrometry that could be found in the scientific literature.
