Abstract

FOI have conducted a project in support of the Swedish Armed Forces concept development regarding land warfare. The aim was to support the development on an operative and military strategic level. The assignment included modelling and simulation, wargaming and assessment, as well as direct support from subject matter experts. The goal of the project was to increase the use of quantitative tools when working with concept development and assessment. Part of the project was aimed at developing the in-house capability at FOI regarding knowledge, methods and tools. During the spring 2020, two wargames were conducted in order to evaluate different assessment tools and to provide colleagues without prior experience of wargames the possibility to learn different types of games and how qualitative methods could be used to support the assessment process. This report summarises the experiences from one of these games focusing on artillery and more specifically analysing constraints for the supply chain for munitions. The work was based on previously conducted studies where FOI have performed lethality assessments for different targets using artillery as well as operational evaluations during military exercises where the supply chain concept had been assessed. An Excel model was developed to simulate the munitions supply chain over time.
