Abstract
MUMS (Model for Underwater Countermeasure Simulation) is a hydroacoustic simulation model developed at FOA/FOI since the 1990s. The model has been used to assess the outcome of duels with regard to performance, environmental conditions, and tactical utilization. The long term ability to use, maintain and further develop MUMS depends on access to personnel who are well acquainted with the structure and function of the simulation model as well as its input and operation. The need to modernize the model in various aspects has been identified. This feasibility study aims to document the need for modernization that exists, as well as provide an overall description of how the modernization should be carried out. The needs are based on existing documentation and experiences from the use of MUMS in studies and other contexts. The proposed architecture is essentially structured as an HLA (High Level Architecture) federation, with a number of components interacting with each other over a communications layer. The proposal is based on a number of desirable features for the modernized model, where the architecture will, among other things, allow that external models can be integrated, and that new sub-models can be developed with other languages and tools. The modernization should take place incrementally, where existing parts of MUMS can collaborate with new components and sub-models.
