Abstract

Globalisation is a process of increasing cross-border integration of relationships through interaction of activities between companies, governments, other organisational entities and individuals. It is characterised by increased scope, speed and intensification of political, cultural and economic activities in networks over different geographical dimensions. This creates crossborder dependencies within the networks of governments, corporations and other actors. In a few sectors, such as the defence industry, regulations have remained as barriers of globalisation. That is now beginning to change. The defence industry consolidate across borders because of increased dependence on globally available civil technologies, decreased defence budgets and growing production and R&D costs, this force corporation to search for new markets. Cross-border consolidation takes place in Europe and to a growing extent transatlantic corporate links develop as well as those with corporations in some Asian countries. This study analyses the drivers of this development and issues that will influence the future of defence industry globalisation. There are opportunities in defence industry globalisation for corporations as will as for states, but also significant barriers - not least political concerns about security of supply and technology transfer. The consequences for the defence industry in Sweden of globalisation imply the traditional notion of the national defence industry´s role has to change. Increasingly the ability to develop new knowledge and technology becomes important and the ability to manufacture platforms becomes less that. The importance of corporation´s position in different industry networks is being discussed. The report highlights the present and possible future roles of the defence industry in Sweden in the emerging global defence industry networks.
