Abstract
The project Weapons Effect on Humans from the research area Weapons, Effects and Protection is this year included in Weapons Traumatology. It is mainly aimed at models and basic data for weapons effect assessments. An integration of medical and technical knowledge is initiated. Modified equipment for blast research has been installed as well as a HPM exposure chamber. They are designed for cell biological applications as well as for small animal experiments. During this year the laboratory´s examination arsenal of morphological techniques has been considerably extended. Numerous new techniques have been successfully tested making the analysis work more efficient and exhaustive. The new techniques of analysis are a basis for our search for clinically applicable criteria for blast trauma. Pressure waves and cavitation affecting endothelial cells revealed in one study changes which could contribute to the explanation of those injuries known as Vietnam lung. Studies on hypothermia and rewarming have indicated that the injured taken care of according to an adequate hypothermic plan shows a considerably lower mortality rate than those who have not. In the production of basic knowledge for the development of simulation programs (the LIBRA system) for the assessment of weapons effects theoretical as well as experimental research has played a vital role.
