Abstract

An area of special interest when studying deception is case studies. Part 2 of the report Strategic counter-deception contains a large number of commented references on deception (chapter 1). Chapter 2 contains elaborate descriptions of a number of cases of strategic deception. These cases are analysed from a weak signals perspective in chapter 3 (weak signal research was treated in part 1). With the aim to demonstrate the versatile nature of deception and its mechanisms, resembling those of advertising and lobbying, a number of shorter cases of deception are presented in chapter 4. These cases are not necessarily of a strategic character. An important part of strategic counter-deception is, according to the authors, continuous monitoring of cases of suspected deception. during the year 2000 a number of cases were monitored. These are listed in chapter 5. This monitoring list can be seen as a pilot study to develop the method of continuous monitoring as a method in the counter-deception arsenal.
