Abstract
This report contains results from two ground combat related groups within FoRMA during 2002. In previous years FoRMA Ground Combat Group has developed concepts for ground forces. The basic idea with these units is small, autonomous units combined with add-on units adapted for different operations. In 2003 these units have been further developed with emphasis on urban warfare. Network soldiers, modern infantry with adequate protection, are interesting in varying levels of conflict and in urban terrain. The armed forces have so far not introduced technology corresponding to civilian communications systems and IT at the soldier level. Many countries have projects aiming to do this, and to decrease the soldier´s physical burden. A proposal for the soldier, squad and platoon level is to introduce a soldier terminal which is a cross-breed between conventional radio systems and third generation mobil phones together with GPS. Different functionality and services of these terminals are outlined. Some functionality of the terminals should be independent of base stations.
