Abstract

There is probably no doubt about the fact that laser weapons will revolutionize the weapon area in many ways. The mere idea that a football sized target can be destroyed at 10 km range the same time it is detected, and the fact that this is happening in silence and with no collateral damage makes one believe that laser weapons have truly revolutionary properties. Other properties include low cost per shot, "deep magazine" and a small logistic footprint which enforces the conclusion. Recent development points towards operational capabilities in a relatively broad way within the next 10-20 years. Platforms such as combat aircraft, fighting vehicles and ships are all relevant as carriers of laser weapons. The report describes the status of laser weapons with emphasis on the development in USA There are also descriptions of basic phenomena and limitations, technology, modelling and simulation as well as an overview of other potential applications for high energy lasers. Development of laser weapons is costly and their new capabilities must be evaluated in relation to conventional weapons. It is therefore recommended that the Swedish Armed Forces follow this area in order to evaluate both the threat and capability sides of the coin. It is therefore reasonable that we maintain and expand the competence in relevant laser areas such as laser radar and DIRCM to include potential upgrade of these systems to high energy levels and to be able to recommend proper protection for high energy lasers.
