Abstract

A groundwater modelling and a vulnerability analysis were performed for the Utö shooting range. The result is presented in map form, the map showing modelled vulnerability of groundwater to contamination, and the flow direction. In addition, the result is delivered to the customer in digital form adapted to a geographic information system, GIS. The groundwater model used is the MODFLOW which is included in the software ´Groundwater Modelling System", GMS. When it comes to the vulnerability analysis, the DRASTIC-index method is used. The calculations are performed in an in-house developed extension to the GIS software ArcView. The result is classified using a relative scale thus enabling the distinction of more or less vulnerable areas. The objective of performing the vulnerability analysis was that it would serve as a basis activity choice in the area, in that way minimizing the risk of groundwater contamination.
