Abstract

Calculations and tests within a four years project have been carried out with the intention to find a method to dispose underwater charges with IM explosives buried in mud or sand. A final test was carried out during 2004 with EFP charges. The disposal charges had a small diameter and a reactive liner. The intention was to start a rapid deflagration or a detonation in the receiver charge. The disposal charge was designed with the calculation tool LS-DYNA fulfilling the requirements on projectile velocity, mass and shape. The verification was partly done with X-ray photography. The final verification was done by detonating the disposal charge with a receiving charge with an extremely insensitive IM explosive. The test showed no initiation of the receiving charge. Clearance of IM-explosives remains a challenge and further research in this area is needed. Based on the experiences from all studies more calculations and tests are recommended.
