Abstract

At the request of the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, the Division of NBC Defence, has conducted a preliminary overview of the existence of NBC or environmental health risks, which military and civilian personnel, deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina, may be exposed to. The study delas with EIHH & PHC (Environmental and Industrial health Hazards and Public Health Concerns) and NBC (CBRN). Key issues of concern are; Local air pollution from industry, traffic, energy production or burning waste; contamination of water with industrial discharge, raw sewage or agricultural runoff; food and water-borne diseases; soil pollution with industrial hazardous waste; poorly maintained waste management (industrial, municipal and medical); industry and ROTA. In general, the greatest hazards posed to Swedish personnel deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina are expected to be public health related issues and, maybe to a lesser extent, ROTA hazards. NBC related health risks will most likely not pose any serious threat to personnel stationed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
