Abstract

The vision of a future Network-Based Intelligence (NBI) service, considered for the Swedish Armed Forces (SWAF), comprises the ability to safely and easily provide and be provided with knowledge relevant for a certain context. NBI should deliver services that will ease cooperation in distributed and networked organizations, and enable automation of intelligence-related processes. In the beginning of 2004, the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) was assigned the task to conduct research related to knowledge management within NBI. The long-term purpose of the research is to provide the Swedish intelligence community with knowledge required for the realization of and shift towards NBI. This study examines and proposes languages for information and knowledge representation within NBI, as well identifying crucial areas where these languages are insufficient at the moment. Furthermore, the study proposes a high level architecture for NBI and suggests methods and techniques for its successful realization.
