Abstract

The present report discusses results and experiences drawn from two defence environmental projects in Russia which have been supervised by the Swedish Defence Research Institute (FOI) and financially supported by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the first project, a risk assessment and a remediation of a large oil spill at the army base in Ostrov-3 were performed. As a spin-off effect, a second project started regarding environmental education of Russian officers within the field of defence-specific activities. The project was carried out by means of seminar lectures covering the whole process from the decision to close a military base, to the most common and widely accepted methods for detection and cleaning up of contaminated soil and groundwater. In addition, the authors were invited to write a chapter in the ´Ecological Handbook of the Russian Army´. The environmental projects have shown the possiblity to retain positive effects and good results from transferring knowledge and parallel applications on practical problems. However, it is important to establish a direct contact with the Russians, preferably on a local level. Without the support from the Green Cross, the successful performance of these projects had not been possible.
