Abstract
At the request of the Swedish Armed Forces, the Division of NBC Defence of the Swedish Defence Research Agency, has conducted a preliminary overview of the existence of NBC or environmental health hazards, to which military and civlian personnel deployed to Aceh, Indonesia, may be exposed. It has proven difficult to obtain confirmed, detailed information about the country in general. Therefore, assessments and data may to some extent be lacking or not fully evaluated. Thus, it is important that the information is continuously updated. The study deals with EIHH & PHC (Environmental and Industrial Health Hazards and Public Health Concerns), NBC threats and diseases. In general, the greatest threats concerning Swedish personnel deployed to Aceh are food and water-borne infections and vector-borne infections. Local hot-spots polluted with for instance hydrocarbons and pesticides may pose a threat as well as the traffic, unless adequate precautions are taken. The climate may to some extent (e.g. large diurnal variations) also pose a threat. NBC-related health hazards will most likely not pose a threat to personnel stationed in Aceh. This report does not discuss the political situation or cultural issues in Aceh. Hence, it is paramount to acquire such knowledge elsewhere, prior to deploying to Aceh.
