Abstract
Commissioned by the Swedish Armed Forces, the FOI NetSim project was initiated in 2004. The overall goal of the project to enhance the body of knowledge about the new generation of architectures for Modeling and Simulation (M&S), and develope methods and infrastructures for building a service oriented environment for network based M&S (NBMS). In these activities, focus has been on issues such as computer based collaboration for M&S, distributed resource repositories, security architectures for NBMS, distributed model execution, and component-based M&S. During the first year, the project aimed at designing a service oriented architecture for NBMS. The architecture is meant to be used for the storage, design, documentation, execution and analysis of network based simulation models, all secured activities. During 2005 a prototype of the proposed architecture has been developed, which demonstrates the different services. This report describes the work, and the issues that have been dealt with, during the last year, such as, development of an infrastructure for computer based collaboration based on High Level Architecture (HLA), distributed resource management based on Web Services (WS), fault-tolerant distributed simulation execution based on WS and with focus on HLA, a framework for component-based model development based on HLA and the BOM technology (Base Object Model), and security mechanisms based on WS. Furthermore, quality assurance activities, such as conference publications and collaborations with other research organizations are presented.
