Abstract

During the spring of 2007 a method development exercise was conducted in a simulated environment in Uppsala, Sweden. The main purpose of the exercise was to test how it works to work in a CRC with staff and methodology according to NATO standard. The exercise was conducted during four days. Five two-hour-games were conducted. Twenty people participated in the exercise. The participants were given different roles in CRC, CAOC or were assigned game personnel. The exercise was planned based on the CJTF-concept (Combined Joint Task Force) regarding methodology, organisation and orders. The scenario was based on a fictitious Peace Support Operation with a multinational task force. The exercise was evaluated based on surveys, discussions and observations. The results show that the participants thought that the exercise was good - well planned, good scenario with technical systems that functioned well. However, they would have liked to have descriptions of how NATO really works in these kinds of settings. The participants thought that it was relatively easy to handle the ATO, ACO, ROE, AOD and Identification Criteria. The people in charge of the exercise were satisfied with the week. They thought that the participants were committed and that the technical systems functioned better than expected.
