Abstract

The report gives an overview of some communication studies relevant to the understanding of current issues in team coordination, provides a theoretical framework for discussion, presents methods of communication research, and introduces upcoming areas and ideas in the field of verbal and data link communication research. As the Swedish Armed Forces are increasingly involved in international operations, the importance of successful communication in critical situations increases. Misunderstandings, failure to get a message, an order or a warning properly across, or delays due to unclear information, are threats apparent to operative forces. The study of team communication works as a window to team processes, and many aspects of teamwork and factors underlying or explaining a team's performance may surface when analyzing their communication. A study is planned in cooperation with the Dutch Air Force, in a project regarding 'Network Enabled Capabilities'. Preparations are being made for data collection in October 2007.
