Abstract

This report describes activities performed within the project "Assessment of Electronic Warfare in Future Swedish Defence" during 2007. The project is running during the period 2006-2008. The objective of the project is to clarify which forms of electronic warfare will be effective against a future network of sensors and operators. The analysis suggests that several new forms of electronic warfare directed at the process of creating situational awareness are more effective than traditional noise jamming of sensors and communication lines. These ideas suggest new and effective methods of electronic warfare involving deception and saturation. The methods have been successfully tested on military operators during staff training. Moreover, the trials have served as an effective pedagogical tool by increasing the understanding of electronic warfare. Electronic threats during international missions have been investigated by studying threats applicable to Swedish troops abroad. A specific example (jamming during a landing on Kabul airport) demonstrates the possibility of effective deceptive jamming when decisions have to be made quickly on the basis of limited information and information is directly available to terrorists on the internet.
