Abstract

The Swedish Armed Forces mobile RN-laboratory can potentially be used in situations where the possibility of ionizing radiation in the surroundings can not be eliminated. Therefore, the amount of shielding provided by the laboratory to personnel on the inside has been estimated. Practical measurements have been performed using two different dose rate instruments and an ambient radiation field using a 137Cs source. To estimate the shielding factor for other relevant radiation sources we also carried out Monte Carlo simulations. For the Monte Carlo calculations a simplified geometrical model was generated. The result from the simulations gives a conservative estimation of 0.4 of the radiation shielding factor, i.e. the dose rate inside is 40 % of the dose rate outside.
