Abstract

This report presents a number of areas where improved local situational awareness can improve or extend the abilities of the armed forces. During the study, representatives from MSS in Skövde and Kvarn, as well as K3 UAV in Karlsborg, have been interviewed. Several scenarios with different information requirements have been identified, and for each of these scenar-ios the importance of improved situation awareness has been discussed. The rapid technological development of sensors and methods for analysis of sen-sor data enables new capacities. The use of both ground-based and airborne sensor systems for improving the situation awareness has been reviewed. After the discussion with MSS it was concluded that improved situation awareness is particularly important at night-time. A sensor system capable of providing improved protection would be very valuable, while also con-tributing to more efficient utilization of staff. Such a sensor system would also be useful for other tasks, for example when monitoring crossroads, bridges etc.
