Abstract
This report gives an overview of the strategic development in Sub-Saharan Africa, from a ten-year perspective. The report takes its departure in Africa's heterogeneity, with great differences in and between states and regions. The way in which security-related issues will develop is complex. Looking at e.g. economic welfare, capacities to manage resources, democratic development, security policy, etc., these areas differ depending where in Africa one study them, and can pose a force for cooperation and peace as well as for deepened conflict. There is, hence a need to study security from different angles and this report structure the analysis by regional actors and regions, thematic issues and external actors. In the final chapter, the report concludes the findings regarding the security situation from a ten-year perspective. The report was commissioned by the Swedish Armed Forces, as input to the long-term planning process, and was written by Analysts from the FOI African Security Study Team.
