Abstract
FMV is acquiring some new projectiles for the disruptor system "Avslagare 40 mm amröj" and the aim of this project is to investigate the risk distances for six new projectile types for the weapon "Avslagare Amröj 40 mm". Different types of firing tests were conducted at FOI Grindsjön. The aim of the firing tests was to determine establish the risk area that occurs when the weapon is fired, regarding the behavior of the projectiles (or fragments) after ricochet. With use of a high speed video camera the tests were recorded in order to analyze the impact angle, ricochet angle, impact velocity, ricochet velocity and other features of the projectile types. The results were completed with calculations to determine the range of each shot. The results from each shot are listed with an estimation of the range of each shot based on ricochet angle and velocity and estimated drag coefficient of the surface area. In the maximum range tests (performed with one of the projectiles) the experimental and theoretical values are very close to each other which indicates that the calculated maximum range after ricochet also accords with reality. The results show that projectiles after ricochet in some cases fly outside the risk area that is recommended by the manufacturer. From the results of the firing tests a recommendation of risk areas are made for the different projectiles. The calculations are based on approximations of e.g. the surface areas and masses but also drag coefficient. To be able to be more confident about the results, more experimental tests are needed; both more tests on each projectile to have a more statistically relevant result but also investigate for example the effect of the drag coefficient after ricochet.
