Abstract

During qualifying tests of vehicle mine protection, one of the requirements is that there shall be no indication of potentially injurious secondary fragments including loose equipment inside the occupant compartment. In order to decide whether an object is harmful or not, injury criteria are needed that are applicable for the parameters recorded during a mine test. This report compiles data found in the literature on energy criteria for injury from both penetrating fragments and blunt objects. Using a tolerance level of AIS 2 as guideline the recommended criteria are a skin penetration criteria of 5 J/cm2 for small objects and for larger objects an energy criteria of 20 J corresponding a low risk of skull fracture.
