Abstract

This report takes a systematic approach to dealing with electromagnetic interference problems in the integration of communication systems on military platforms, and proposes methods to evaluate and determine the most e ective technical measures. Di erent aspects of choosing measures that improve the interference situation on a single platform, or on multiple co-located platforms, are discussed. This work has been performed within the project RICOM (Robust Integration of Wireless Telecommunication Systems). First, we discuss the general types of technical measures that can be undertaken, and the pre-requisities and drawbacks for each type. Then, we discuss the economical cost of measures, since cost is often an important parameter in the choice of a measure. A method is proposed for nding approximate bit error probability (BEP) in a scenario with multiple impulsive interference sources. The proposed method is then used to compute the required attenuation for each interfering signal, to meet the desired system performance. Next, we deal with power control when multiple communicating systems interfere with each other, and are a ected by impulsive noise. Finally, we show how the proposed methods can be used, by applying them to a practical example. The main conclusion of this work is that interference sources and systems that a ect each other should be considered simultaneously, both when an interference problem has occurred and when new systems are integrated on an existing platform.
