Abstract
In the project Energetic Materials and Processes, FOI builds knowledge to be applied in e.g. assessment of specific explosives compositions in weapons and protection systems. The goal is to use dedicated experiments to calibrate physics-based models that subsequently can be used to assess for example ammunition subjects to fire, fragment impact, setback, fall etc. The work currently focuses on model evaluation and improvement in three areas: thermal initiation, mechanical properties and atomistic models for shock compression. In the area of thermal initiation, an experiments has been setup in order to validate a previously developed finite element model. This experiment can also be used to calibrate model parameters for a given explosive. Furthermore, experimental methods for characterising mechanical properties have been tested and evaluated. Finally, we present a literature overview together with preliminary simulations of shock compression of two explosive crystals using reactive molecular dynamics. Each of these sections are concluded with a discussion of future work.
