Abstract

The Swedish Marine wants to improve the ability to quickly switch between missions and has therefore asked FOI to study information infrastructures for situationally adaptable systems from a security point of view. This report presents the result of a pilot study of the security functionality in cloud services, with special focus on private Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solutions to see whether they are suitable for the Swedish Armed Forces by balancing benefits and risks. OpenStack was chosen for the study and its security functionality is described on a general level. Furthermore the PaaS cloud concept is discussed from the perspective of the Swedish Armed Forces. The conclusion of the pilot study states that the cloud concept is worth further studies, since it in some situations and applications offers an increased ability in comparison with existing systems. The increased ability is also deemed to exceed possible threats, risks and costs induced by a change.
