Abstract

The out of area operations that Sweden participates in places new demands on both the people and the ammunition used in the operations. Traditionally, ammunition for the Swedish Armed Forces is qualified for Swedish conditions. International operations generally take place in an environment that differs significantly from conditions in Sweden. The ammunition is subjected to higher temperatures, larger diurnal temperature fluctuations, higher humidity, more severe mechanical stresses (shock, vibration) etc. than originally constructed for. Sweden participates in an EDA (European Defence Agency) project (B-0488-GEM2- GP) within the area Munition Life Management (MLM). Areas considered within the project are related to storage and material degradation of components in ammunition during out-of-area operations (OoA operations). Participating nations in the project are the Netherlands, Italy and Sweden, under lead of the Netherlands. This report covers the second year of the project and the work done in the second work package: Out of Area Operations. In the second work package results from ammunition surveillance and environmental logging has been studied together with different techniques for sensoring.
