Abstract

Horizon scanning aims at capturing current research conducted by various research organizations with potential applications within the defence and security domains. The scope is forward looking with a time perspective for future applications in a time frame of 10 to 25 years. The scanning results are evaluated regarding potential significance for the Armed Forces and suggestions for possible future applications are given. This report summarizes the activities of 2017. A major part of the project was performed within a project agreement with the research organizations TNO (The Netherlands) and DRDC (Canada). Methods for horizon scanning and assessment were further developed and adapted. FOI's tool for automatic scanning of databases, HSTOOL, was rebuilt to communicate with databases that contained documents written in English. The report also summarizes related horizon scanning activities on-going at FOI.
