Abstract

Over the past few years there has been a rapid development in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The technique behind many of the success stories (automatic image processing and intelligent systems for game playing, just to mention a few) is Deep Learning, but other AI methods have also attained a renewed interest which has led to interesting results. As a consequence of the positive developments, AI techniques are now being adapted and evaluated for use in various domains, including military and defense. The use of AI in the military domain is controversial and many practical, ethical, psychological and security related problems remain to be solved. However, it also brings along a potential for significant improvements in a variety of different systems. For Swedish authorities in the defense sector, keeping up to date with recent developments in AI - and the potential effects of these developments in the battlefield - is of utmost importance. This report contains a compilation of ideas for how AI could be applied in areas of special interest for FOI.
