Abstract

The report is the result of a literature study performed at FOI with the purpose of exploring the possibilities of new 5G technologies in military communication. The report begins by mentioning proposed 5G scenarios and briefly describing the current standardization situation and the 5G system. Thereafter, the various techniques studied and their possible consequences for military communication are described. Generally, 5G will contribute to more redundancy and increased flexibility. It brings several benefits as fast network reconfigurations that increase robustness against interference and jamming. Several new technologies are predicted to be of importance for military communications, for example Software Defined Networking (SDN) and new ways to perform interference cancellation.
