Abstract
The present report presents a field study performed at a former military firing range and training area. The purpose of the field study was to evaluate and develop a method of excavation for verification purposes. The verification concerns a specific area, cleared from unexploded ordnance (UXO) to a normal standard. The excavations aid in establishing the occurrence of any remaining UXO or other ammunition related objects after the clearance has been performed. The results from the excavations can be used directly for estimating the probability of detection for the search method used, and indirectly for approximation of remaining UXO in an area that have been previously cleared. During the excavations, no UXO was encountered. However, one ammunition related object of significant size, which probably should have been removed during the preceding clearing, was encountered. During the excavations, many lessons were learned, and the method of excavation was developed over the course of the field study. The results from the field study have been used in development of a method for estimating the probability of detection in a parallel study.
