Abstract
The North Sea is one of the busiest oceans in the world in terms of shipping, fishing and sea-based industries, but is also an important habitat for many marine species. These species can be negatively affected by human activities, i.e. noise from commercial ships. There is a need for knowledge about the level of this noise in the sea and how it can affect marine animals. The EU project Joint Monitoring Program for Ambient Noise North Sea (JOMOPANS) ran during 2018-2022, and aimed to develop an operational, standardized and coordinated monitoring program for continuous noise in the North Sea. The project carried out measurements at 18 locations in the North Sea, and numerical modelling, which resulted in a large amount of high-quality sound maps of the North Sea, and a web-based-tool for environmental impact analysis. The measurement data were used to test and validate the numerical model results, identify noise sources, and to build experience on how a monitoring program can be coordinated. This report give researchers, authorities, the shipping industry and the public an overview of the results produced within the project and a description of the work carried out nationally by the Swedish Defence Research Institute (FOI).
