Abstract
Host Nation Support is the civil and military assistance rendered in peace, crisis, and war by a Host Nation to forces or organizations that are located on or in transit through the Host Nation's territory. It is important that Sweden develops its ability to deliver Host Nation Support, not least because it is an aspiring NATO member. Host Nation Support may involve the provision of transport and logistical services, food, fuel, electricity, medical services, electronic communications, maintenance and repair services, shelter and storage facilities, amongst other things. This report offers an overview of what Host Nation Support is and how it relates to Swedish military logistics and civil defence planning. The report also identifies a number of variables that Swedish actors need to take into account when developing their ability to deliver Host Nation Support. Examples from the energy sector are used to highlight key considerations and potential challenges that can arise in the planning process. Moreover, the report contains three fictional scenarios that invite readers to consider what delivering Host Nation Support might mean for them in practice.
