Abstract
"If War Comes" (Om kriget kommer) was a classic Swedish brochure during the Cold War, intended to inform all Swedish citizens about the nation's total defence (including both military and civil defence). However, war was not the only threat considered by Swedish total defence planners. In this report, it is shown how the preparation for total defence also included a range of non-military threats, such as economic and psychological warfare. The report also includes examples of earlier discussions of challenges of threats in the grey zone. The motivation behind this relatively complex understanding of threats in Sweden during the Cold War was simple - to create the most resilient society possible, prepared for military as well as non-military warfare, or a combination of both. In times of uncertainty and war in Europe, this goal has once again become a key issue for the Swedish total defence.
