Abstract

This document presents a pre publication of educational material under development intended for classes on the interior ballistics of guns. The present edition is limited to recoiling weapons, i.e. closed-breech guns. The material treats the sequence of events within the barrel, from initiation through to just after the projectile exits the muzzle. Initially the concept of interior ballistics and its scope are defined and the interior ballistic cycle is described. A section on propellants and propellant combustion is followed by detailed derivations of equations for computation of the state in the barrel and of the development of the event. A brief section is devoted to certain physics, that constitute necessary prerequisites for proper understanding of the material. These physics are preferably acquired from regular classes on classical mechanics and thermodynamics. This publication is intended to form a basis around which the course material can evolve. With the experience from practical application of the material, the need for adjustments, additions and omissions will be recognized. Hopefully opportunities will be given to extend and revise the contents into coming editions based on participant feed-back and client requests
