Air, Land and Maritime Systems

The research area Air, Land, and Maritime Systems covers systems in the land, maritime, and air domains. Activities within Air, Land, and Maritime Systems research area help ensure that the Swedish Armed Forces maintain expertise on the characteristics of platforms on land, at sea, and in the air, such as mobility, range, and endurance. This expertise is central to specifying requirements for military capability development.

Research on land systems includes performance analysis and assessment of the combat effectiveness of land platforms and their associated weapon systems.

Research on naval systems is similarly focused on systems analysis of surface combatants and underwater vehicles. In both the land and maritime domains, different concept proposals are evaluated from a systems integration perspective, up to the practical operational level.

Research on air systems ranges from fundamental aeronautical questions, through system-level studies, to all aspects of air-operational assessment. Within this research area, FOI also operates the Air Force’s Air Combat Simulation Centre (FLSC), a simulation facility for manned air combat and tactics development.

To support higher-level systems assessment, we develop models, analytical methods, and assessment tools to evaluate the effect of cooperation between military platforms, weapon systems, and units, both within each domain and across domains (multi-domain operations).
