Abstract
This report summarises the results of the research program NBC-studies at FOI during the fiscal year 2002. The work covers research and studies for the Armed Forces and the KBM concerning protection against NBC-weapons. The work has been directed towards o breathing hazards from clouds of chemical- and biological weapons. o detection of B-agents with fluorescence technique. o development of an NBC decision support system o NBC-protection related to international peace keeping operations. o study of consequences of terrorism and the use of NBC-agents. The study of health hazards related to international peace keeping operations has been finished during 2002. The final report presents concrete proposals to improved routines for 1) intelligence 2) reconnaissance 3) recruiting 4) training 5) acquisition of material and 6) sampling. A study of decontamination of B-agents has been performed during 2002. The results show that the need for decon is highly variable and totally dependent on the type of agents that has been released. Most agents are self decontaminated so quickly that decontamination is not necessary. The exception is when spores, for example anthrax, have been released. At such an occasion decontamination is always needed.
