Abstract

In the Swedish Army exercise ASÖ-2005 K3 continued field trials with the air mobile battalion. FOI was commissioned to support evaluation of logistics and C2 in the exercise. Two FOI personnel with experience from the domain and with methods and tools for field studies worked in close collaboration with development officers from K3 G3 in preparing, performing and reporting data from the exercise. Observations, registration of communication, positioning of units over time, and interviews were essential sources of information. Specific conclusions for each sequence of the exercise are described in the report, but two general conclusions, based on data from the exercise, are: 1. Non-suitable equipment. The majority of equipment in the battalion is a heritage from the old invasion defence and is not adapted to the specific needs of the air mobile battalion. A flexible unit adapted for air mobility require lighter equipment at all parts of the unit, from individual soldiers to overall logistics solutions. 2. Development of medical recources. In several aspects the medical resources in the unit are of very high standard. However, as with the equipment described above, the medical resources are not systematically adapted to the needs of an independently performing air mobile unit. Further development and adaptation of methods, techniques, organisation and C2 of medical resources in the unit is imperative.
